Canned Food Market Size in Turkey
For the third consecutive year, the Turkish canned food market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Canned food consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Canned Food Production in Turkey
In value terms, canned food production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 25%. Canned food production peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports from Turkey
For the sixth consecutive year, Turkey recorded growth in overseas shipments of canned food, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +66.9% against 2014 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, canned food exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for canned food exports from Turkey, with a 23% share of total exports. Moreover, canned food exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iraq (X tons), with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to +9.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+7.4% per year) and Iraq (+9.2% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned food exports from Turkey, comprising 24% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +7.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+5.0% per year) and Iraq (+3.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2020, the average canned food export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 5.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2020, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Canned Food Imports
Imports into Turkey
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of canned food increased by 18% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned food imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned food imports to Turkey, together accounting for 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ireland, France, the Netherlands, China, Denmark, Iraq, Thailand, Iran, the Czech Republic and Lebanon, which together accounted for a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +33.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Ireland ($X) appeared to be the largest canned food suppliers to Turkey, with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic, China, Iraq, Thailand, Lebanon and Iran, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +34.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average canned food import price stood at $X per ton in 2020, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
