Wood Fuel Market Size in Turkey
The Turkish wood fuel market contracted to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -7% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 573% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Turkey
In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of wood fuel were exported from Turkey; shrinking by -13.2% against 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 8,350%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood fuel exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17,808% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X cubic meters) was the main destination for wood fuel exports from Turkey, with a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, wood fuel exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X cubic meters), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tunisia (X cubic meters), with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands amounted to +46.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+14.7% per year) and Tunisia (+100.0% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for wood fuel exported from Turkey worldwide, with a combined 69% share of total exports. Tunisia, Australia, France, Italy, Kuwait, Canada, Israel, Hong Kong SAR, Ireland and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +7,711.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wood fuel export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 301%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tunisia (+3,805.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wood Fuel Imports
Imports into Turkey
In 2022, overseas purchases of wood fuel increased by 271% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, faced a sharp descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 330% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood fuel imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 353% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Georgia (X cubic meters) was the main wood fuel supplier to Turkey, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Georgia amounted to +42.1%.
In value terms, Georgia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood fuel to Turkey.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Georgia amounted to +58.1%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wood fuel import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 85% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Georgia.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Georgia amounted to +11.3% per year.
