In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste, when their volume decreased by -9.6% to X square meters. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 598%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, silk fabric exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 207%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X square meters) was the main destination for silk fabric exports from Turkey, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, silk fabric exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X square meters), eightfold. Egypt (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Iraq totaled +128.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+2.9% per year) and Egypt (+56.7% per year).

In value terms, Iraq ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exports from Turkey, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Iraq amounted to +115.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+2.3% per year) and Lebanon (+56.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average silk fabric export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, jumping by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 61%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tunisia (+20.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste, when their volume increased by 66% to X square meters. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, silk fabric imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of silk fabric to Turkey, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, silk fabric imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X square meters), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X square meters), with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-5.8% per year) and India (-11.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste to Turkey, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-4.9% per year) and South Korea (+20.4% per year).

The average silk fabric import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while the price for India ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
