In 2021, the Turkish wrapping papers market increased by 11% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Exports from Turkey

For the third consecutive year, Turkey recorded growth in overseas shipments of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, which increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main destinations of wrapping papers exports from Turkey, together comprising 63% of total exports. These countries were followed by Georgia, Angola, Bulgaria, Morocco, Tunisia, Germany, Israel, Poland, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Angola (with a CAGR of +100.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wrapping papers exported from Turkey were Iraq ($X), Iran ($X) and Portugal ($X), together comprising 52% of total exports. Georgia, Bulgaria, Germany, Angola, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia, Poland, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Angola, with a CAGR of +109.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wrapping papers export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, supplies from abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +54.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of wrapping papers imports to Turkey, with a combined 37% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, Bulgaria, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, the Czech Republic, Italy, France, Slovakia and Finland, which together accounted for a further 49%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +27.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wrapping papers suppliers to Turkey were Germany ($X), Russia ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined 38% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, Bulgaria, the United States, Italy, France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Canada, Finland and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 47%.

Among the main suppliers, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +25.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wrapping papers import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bosnia and Herzegovina (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
