After two years of decline, overseas purchases of adipic acid, its salts and esters increased by 7.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, adipic acid imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Brazil (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of adipic acid imports to the United States, with a combined 73% share of total imports. France, South Korea, India, the Netherlands and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +25.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest adipic acid suppliers to the United States were Canada ($X), Brazil ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports.
