Mexico (X tons) was the main destination for aluminium foil exports from the United States, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, aluminium foil exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mexico totaled +5.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-12.8% per year) and the UK (-2.1% per year).
In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminium foil exports from the United States, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Mexico totaled +5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-7.8% per year) and the UK (-4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average aluminium foil export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 9.8% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, approx. X tons of aluminium foil were imported into the United States; with an increase of 11% against 2020 figures. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, aluminium foil imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of aluminium foil imports to the United States, with a combined 40% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Turkey, Oman, the UK, Brazil, Greece, Luxembourg, Russia, Taiwan (Chinese) and India, which together accounted for a further 40%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +179.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the largest aluminium foil suppliers to the United States, together comprising 36% of total imports. Thailand, Turkey, Oman, Luxembourg, Brazil, Greece, the UK, Taiwan (Chinese), India and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Among the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +159.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average aluminium foil import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 20%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
