Banana Market Size in the U.S.
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in the U.S. banana market, when its value increased by 2.9% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4.1%. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Ecuador (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Guatemala totaled +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-2.3% per year) and Ecuador (-1.4% per year).
In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bananas to the United States, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Guatemala totaled +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-2.0% per year) and Ecuador (-3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average banana import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Colombia ($X per ton) and Costa Rica ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) and Guatemala ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
