Beer Market Size in the U.S.
In 2022, the U.S. beer market increased by 0.9% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Beer consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Beer Production in the U.S.
In value terms, beer production declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Beer Exports
Exports from the U.S.
In 2022, shipments abroad of beer increased by 1.9% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, beer exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +44.3% against 2020 indices. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Chile (X tons), Panama (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) were the main destinations of beer exports from the United States, together accounting for 49% of total exports. Mexico, Guatemala, Bahamas, Paraguay, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, South Korea, Oman, Costa Rica and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Oman (with a CAGR of +33.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Chile ($X), Panama ($X) and Honduras ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for beer exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. These countries were followed by Guatemala, Bahamas, Mexico, South Korea, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Oman and Colombia, which together accounted for a further 28%.
Among the main countries of destination, Oman, with a CAGR of +35.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average beer export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 21% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, beer export price increased by +63.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Beer Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2022, approx. X tons of beer were imported into the United States; growing by 9.2% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 37%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, beer imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.3% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 11%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mexico (X tons) constituted the largest beer supplier to the United States, with a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, beer imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. Canada (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico totaled +6.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+1.0% per year) and Canada (-6.7% per year).
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constituted the largest supplier of beer to the United States, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Ireland, with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Mexico totaled +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-1.7% per year) and Ireland (-0.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average beer import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
