Bismuth Market Size in the U.S.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the U.S. bismuth market, when its value increased by 16% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep contraction. Bismuth consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +103.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 44%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, bismuth exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for bismuth exports from the United States, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, bismuth exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X tons), ninefold. Canada (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam stood at +8.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (-7.7% per year) and Canada (-11.9% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for bismuth exports from the United States, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam totaled +16.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (-5.1% per year) and Canada (-8.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average bismuth export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bismuth imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 57%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bismuth to the United States, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, bismuth imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), fivefold. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+23.5% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+312.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bismuth to the United States, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+11.0% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+144.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average bismuth import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 25% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (-4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
