The U.S. bridge market fell markedly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -19.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In value terms, bridge production fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bridge exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 44%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons) was the main destination for bridge exports from the United States, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, bridge exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Honduras (X tons), sixfold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada amounted to -12.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Honduras (+32.7% per year) and Chile (+11.5% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) exports from the United States, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Honduras ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada stood at -12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Honduras (+41.0% per year) and Chile (+15.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average bridge export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Honduras (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Bridge Imports
Imports into the U.S.
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) decreased by -41.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports showed a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 86%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bridge imports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Malaysia (X tons), Canada (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of bridge imports to the United States, with a combined 53% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +79.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest bridge suppliers to the United States were Malaysia ($X), Canada ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 60% of total imports.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +73.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average bridge import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
