In 2022, the U.S. cadmium market decreased by -24.9% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed measured growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the U.S.
In 2021, approx. X tons of cadmium were exported from the United States; with an increase of 194% against 2020 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cadmium exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
India (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main destinations of cadmium exports from the United States, together accounting for 89% of total exports. Mexico, South Korea and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +53.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the largest markets for cadmium exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 78% share of total exports. Brazil, South Korea and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
South Korea, with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cadmium export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 114%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+17.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cadmium Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, approx. X tons of cadmium were imported into the United States; which is down by -37.5% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 90%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cadmium imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 92%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest cadmium supplier to the United States, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, cadmium imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Canada (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +69.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+66.0% per year) and Canada (-14.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cadmium to the United States, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by Canada, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +57.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+61.6% per year) and Canada (-21.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average cadmium import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -15.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (-1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
