After four years of growth, the U.S. copper chain market decreased by -12.8% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. Copper chain consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, copper chain production expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 8.8%. Copper chain production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Copper Chain Exports
Exports from the U.S.
In 2022, copper chain exports from the United States fell rapidly to X tons, declining by -16.4% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 555%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper chain exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 267% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of copper chain exports from the United States, with a combined 86% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +156.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the key foreign market for chain and parts thereof of copper exports from the United States, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Korea totaled +99.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+1.2% per year) and Guatemala (+29.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average copper chain export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 140%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+34.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Copper Chain Imports
Imports into the U.S.
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of chain and parts thereof of copper decreased by -24% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 95%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.
In value terms, copper chain imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 129%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest copper chain supplier to the United States, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, copper chain imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.9% per year) and Vietnam (+228.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest copper chain suppliers to the United States, together comprising 78% of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +160.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average copper chain import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 42%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
