Spacecraft Market Size in the U.S.
The U.S. spacecraft market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep contraction. Spacecraft consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Spacecraft Production in the U.S.
In value terms, spacecraft production rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, the total production indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Spacecraft Exports
Exports from the U.S.
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles decreased by -59.4% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 502%. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, spacecraft exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
New Zealand (X units), India (X units) and French Guiana (X units) were the main destinations of spacecraft exports from the United States, with a combined 82% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for New Zealand (with a CAGR of +98.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, French Guiana ($X) remains the key foreign market for civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles exports from the United States, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to French Guiana stood at -24.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: New Zealand (+291.5% per year) and India (+28.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average spacecraft export price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 91% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 159% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was French Guiana ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to French Guiana (+110.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Spacecraft Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2020, the amount of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles imported into the United States skyrocketed to X units, jumping by 400% compared with 2019. Overall, imports recorded a tangible expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, spacecraft imports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a dramatic decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 30,853%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2020, the UK (X units) constituted the largest spacecraft supplier to the United States, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, spacecraft imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, New Zealand (X units), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from the UK stood at +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (0.0% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of civil spacecraft, satellites and launch vehicles to the United States, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK totaled +38.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (0.0% per year) and Italy (-22.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2020, the average spacecraft import price amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 315% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 17,096% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
