Coffee extract exports from the United States expanded sharply to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 7.5% against 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, coffee extract exports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons) was the main destination for coffee extract exports from the United States, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee extract exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), fivefold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada totaled +1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+29.6% per year) and Mexico (+3.9% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for coffee extracts, essences and concentrates exports from the United States, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Canada totaled -2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+0.3% per year) and Thailand (+28.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average coffee extract export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Coffee Extract Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, supplies from abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, coffee extract imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee extract imports to the United States, together comprising 65% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany, which together accounted for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +69.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Colombia ($X), Mexico ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the largest coffee extract suppliers to the United States, with a combined 63% share of total imports. India, Vietnam, South Korea, Malaysia, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +53.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average coffee extract import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
