Overall, exports, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of paper and paperboard exports from the United States, with a combined 72% share of total exports. South Korea, Australia, Turkey and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest markets for paper and paperboard exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. South Korea, India, Turkey and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
Among the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -1.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Paper And Paperboard Imports
Imports into the U.S.
Paper and paperboard imports into the United States contracted to X tons in 2022, declining by -7% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest paper and paperboard supplier to the United States, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), fourfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France totaled +12.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+20.6% per year) and Italy (+28.4% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) to the United States, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France stood at +14.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+16.6% per year) and Italy (+19.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
