The U.S. powdered milk market surged to $X in 2022, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. In 2022, overseas shipments of powdered milk decreased by -4.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In value terms, powdered milk exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons) was the main destination for powdered milk exports from the United States, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, powdered milk exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (X tons), with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mexico totaled +6.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+9.5% per year) and Indonesia (+9.6% per year).

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the key foreign market for powdered milk exports from the United States, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Mexico stood at +8.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+11.5% per year) and Indonesia (+11.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average powdered milk export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 32% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, powdered milk export price increased by +93.1% against 2018 indices. Imports into the U.S.

Powdered milk imports into the United States skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, increasing by 35% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 107%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, powdered milk imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +100.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) constituted the largest powdered milk supplier to the United States, with a 73% share of total imports. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Mexico totaled +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+12.9% per year) and New Zealand (-7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average powdered milk import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, powdered milk import price increased by +57.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year.
