In value terms, durum wheat exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 57%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Algeria (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of durum wheat exports from the United States, with a combined 81% share of total exports. Nigeria, Morocco, Venezuela and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +100.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for durum wheat exported from the United States were Italy ($X), Algeria ($X) and Belgium ($X), together accounting for 78% of total exports. Morocco, Nigeria, Venezuela and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
Morocco, with a CAGR of +97.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average durum wheat export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.
In 2022, supplies from abroad of durum wheat increased by 193% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, durum wheat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a moderate increase. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Canada (X tons) was the main supplier of durum wheat to the United States, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled +9.5%.
