The U.S. market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines contracted to $X in 2021, which is down by -5.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a pronounced decline. Fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, exports of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines from the United States declined dramatically to X tons, reducing by -32.3% against 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +61.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Mexico (X tons) was the main destination for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from the United States, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Jamaica (X tons), with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico stood at +24.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+6.8% per year) and Jamaica (+0.8% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X), Germany ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 66% of total exports. China, Belgium, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Bahamas and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines amounted to $X per ton, growing by 64% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Costa Rica (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines, when their volume increased by 37% to X tons. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 341% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Mexico (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main suppliers of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports to the United States, together comprising 96% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +21.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Chile ($X), Canada ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the largest fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine suppliers to the United States, with a combined 91% share of total imports.
