Crude Glycerol Market Size in the U.S.

In 2021, the U.S. crude glycerol market decreased by -7.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes exported from the United States skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 83% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 226%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude glycerol exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 116%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main destinations of crude glycerol exports from the United States, with a combined 59% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, China and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +155.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Canada ($X) and Mexico ($X) constituted the largest markets for crude glycerol exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, South Korea and China, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +136.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average crude glycerol export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -11.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes increased by 5.2% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 547% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude glycerol imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 390% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of crude glycerol to the United States, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, crude glycerol imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada totaled +36.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-7.1% per year) and India (+52.8% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of crude glycerol, glycerine waters and lyes to the United States, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Canada amounted to +48.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+62.7% per year) and Argentina (+1.8% per year).

In 2021, the average crude glycerol import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 58% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
