Graphite Market Size in the U.S.
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the U.S. graphite market, when its value increased by 49% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Graphite Exports
Exports from the U.S.
In 2021, overseas shipments of graphite (natural) increased by 41% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild increase. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite exports from the United States, together accounting for 62% of total exports. Japan, India, Belgium and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belgium (with a CAGR of +68.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the key foreign market for graphite exports from the United States, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Korea totaled +33.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+2.1% per year) and Mexico (+0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -16.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 35%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Graphite Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, purchases abroad of graphite (natural) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, graphite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite imports to the United States, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Madagascar, Brazil, Hong Kong SAR and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +73.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to the United States, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (-3.1% per year) and Brazil (-3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average graphite import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+21.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
