After six years of growth, the U.S. halogenated hydrocarbon derivative market decreased by -0.3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a prominent expansion. Halogenated hydrocarbon derivative consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative production reached $X in 2022. In general, production, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports from the U.S.

For the third consecutive year, the United States recorded decline in overseas shipments of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons, which decreased by -1.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +34.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main destinations of halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exports from the United States, with a combined 56% share of total exports. Egypt, India, China, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), Brazil, Japan and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +42.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Colombia ($X) and Canada ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for halogenated hydrocarbon derivative exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 53% of total exports. South Korea, India, Taiwan (Chinese), China, Brazil, Egypt, Japan and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Egypt, with a CAGR of +27.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average halogenated hydrocarbon derivative export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative export price increased by +44.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 33% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2022, imports of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons into the United States fell to X tons, with a decrease of -11.3% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 60%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), China (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of halogenated hydrocarbon derivative imports to the United States, together comprising 78% of total imports. Brazil, France, Japan, Mexico and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +30.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons to the United States, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+20.2% per year) and Germany (+1.1% per year).

The average halogenated hydrocarbon derivative import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
