Hat And Headgear Market Size in the U.S.

In 2022, the U.S. hat and headgear market decreased by -4.5% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Hat and headgear exports from the United States skyrocketed to X units in 2022, increasing by 285% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 286%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hat and headgear exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Canada (X units) was the main destination for hat and headgear exports from the United States, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, hat and headgear exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X units), threefold. Australia (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada totaled +36.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+24.7% per year) and Australia (+41.8% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest markets for hat and headgear exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 70% of total exports.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +15.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average hat and headgear export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -63.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (-7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the U.S.

For the third consecutive year, the United States recorded growth in overseas purchases of hats and other headgear, which increased by 7.7% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, hat and headgear imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

China (X units), Bangladesh (X units) and Vietnam (X units) were the main suppliers of hat and headgear imports to the United States, together accounting for 82% of total imports. Mexico, Cambodia, Myanmar and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +328.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hats and other headgear to the United States, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+14.7% per year) and Bangladesh (+14.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average hat and headgear import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per unit), while the price for Cambodia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
