In 2021, the U.S. canned meat market decreased by -8.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Canned meat consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of canned meat increased by 23% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 38%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned meat exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from the United States, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, canned meat exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mexico (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+22.2% per year) and Mexico (-0.2% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned meat exports from the United States, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Canada was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+19.1% per year) and Mexico (+3.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average canned meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 25% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.
For the fourth year in a row, the United States recorded growth in overseas purchases of canned meat, which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +105.8% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, canned meat imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +61.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Canada (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned meat imports to the United States, together comprising 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Chile, Poland, Uruguay and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +27.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned meat suppliers to the United States were Brazil ($X), Canada ($X) and Uruguay ($X), together accounting for 78% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Poland, Chile and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 13%.
Chile, with a CAGR of +32.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average canned meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
