For the fourth year in a row, the U.S. kaolin market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -22.7% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a abrupt setback. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Kaolin Production in the U.S.

In value terms, kaolin production totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, production showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Exports from the U.S.

In 2021, overseas shipments of kaolin and kaolinic clays increased by 17% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, kaolin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of kaolin exports from the United States, together accounting for 42% of total exports. Canada, Finland, Taiwan (Chinese), India, Belgium, Sweden, South Korea, Germany, Indonesia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

Overall, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, kaolin imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the main supplier of kaolin to the United States, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, kaolin imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil totaled -11.1%.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of kaolin and kaolinic clays to the United States, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.

In 2021, the average kaolin import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 21% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
