The U.S. lead ore market fell slightly to $X in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a deep slump. Lead ore consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lead ore production rose modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a drastic downturn. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of lead ores, when their volume increased by 3.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lead ore exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main destinations of lead ore exports from the United States, together comprising 71% of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Mexico, Germany and Italy, which together accounted for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +156.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Canada ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the largest markets for lead ore exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 80% of total exports. Japan, Mexico, Germany and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +155.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average lead ore export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, lead ore export price increased by +15.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lead Ore Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, the amount of lead ores imported into the United States soared to X tons, with an increase of 72,272% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lead ore imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Canada (X tons) was the main lead ore supplier to the United States, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled +17.6%.
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lead ore to the United States.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Canada amounted to -1.5%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average lead ore import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 426% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, faced a deep downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Canada.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Canada amounted to -16.3% per year.
