Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for molluscs exports from the United States, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, molluscs exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to -8.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-0.3% per year) and Japan (-7.9% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from the United States, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to China totaled -2.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-3.3% per year) and France (-3.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, molluscs export price decreased by -19.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. China (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to the United States, with a combined 45% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, India, Peru, Taiwan (Chinese), Japan, Chile, Indonesia, the Philippines, Mexico and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 45%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +21.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Spain ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest molluscs suppliers to the United States, with a combined 41% share of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
