In 2021, the U.S. memories market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, shipments abroad of multichip integrated circuits: memories increased by 5.1% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, memories exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) and Mexico (X units) were the main destinations of memories exports from the United States, together accounting for 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam, Malaysia, China and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 9.5%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for memories exported from the United States were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Mexico ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Vietnam, Malaysia, China and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 29%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +24.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
The average memories export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -9.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 7.3%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of multichip integrated circuits: memories increased by 30% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, memories imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) constituted the largest memories supplier to the United States, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, memories imports from Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (X units), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Taiwan (Chinese) was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-3.4% per year) and Thailand (-9.7% per year).
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest supplier of multichip integrated circuits: memories to the United States, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Taiwan (Chinese) was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-0.2% per year) and Thailand (+0.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average memories import price amounted to $X per unit, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while the price for Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
