In 2021, the U.S. non-medical x-ray market increased by 75% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption showed prominent growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Non-Medical X-Ray Production in the U.S.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray production declined modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 49%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of non-medical x-rays decreased by -30.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 24%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons) was the main destination for non-medical x-ray exports from the United States, accounting for a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, non-medical x-ray exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Japan (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mexico was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+6.3% per year) and Japan (-4.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for non-medical x-ray exported from the United States were China ($X), Mexico ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 27% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, the UK, Canada, Japan, Egypt, India, Australia, France, Italy and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 37%.

Among the main countries of destination, Egypt, with a CAGR of +28.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average non-medical x-ray export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2021, non-medical x-ray imports into the United States expanded notably to X tons, picking up by 5.8% against 2020. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -10.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of non-medical x-ray imports to the United States, together comprising 48% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Belarus, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Canada, Israel, the Czech Republic, South Korea, China and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 41%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +142.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-medical x-ray suppliers to the United States were the UK ($X), Germany ($X) and Japan ($X), together accounting for 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Belarus, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Israel, Canada, the Czech Republic, South Korea, China and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 38%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +145.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average non-medical x-ray import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were the UK ($X per ton) and Israel ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
