The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Packaging materials consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Exports from the U.S.
In 2022, approx. X tons of packaging materials were exported from the United States; increasing by 1.6% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 5.8%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, packaging materials exports rose notably to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Mexico (X tons), Canada (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of packaging materials exports from the United States, with a combined 58% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +3.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for packaging materials exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. Japan, Costa Rica, Guatemala, South Korea, Ecuador, Colombia, Italy, Chile, Honduras and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +7.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average packaging materials export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Honduras (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.
For the third year in a row, the United States recorded growth in supplies from abroad of packaging materials, which increased by 0.3% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, packaging materials imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of packaging materials to the United States, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, packaging materials imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Sweden (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled +3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (+7.9% per year) and Sweden (+25.1% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of packaging materials to the United States, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada stood at +4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (+8.5% per year) and Sweden (+22.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average packaging materials import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
