Overall, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polypropylene in primary forms export price increased by +66.2% against 2020 indices. Imports into the U.S.
In 2022, polypropylene in primary forms imports into the United States fell significantly to X tons, waning by -21% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 111%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, polypropylene in primary forms imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 172%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest polypropylene in primary forms supplier to the United States, with a 33% share of total imports. Moreover, polypropylene in primary forms imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), twofold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada amounted to +14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+11.4% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+47.9% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X), South Korea ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest polypropylene in primary forms suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 53% of total imports. Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Colombia, Belgium, Taiwan (Chinese), Israel and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +58.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average polypropylene in primary forms import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Israel ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
