In 2022, the U.S. primary cell and battery market increased by 9.9% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after five years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in the U.S.

In value terms, primary cell and battery production shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Primary cell and battery production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

For the seventh consecutive year, the United States recorded decline in overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries, which decreased by -3.6% to X units in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 1.9% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary cell and battery exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Canada (X units) was the main destination for primary cell and battery exports from the United States, with a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, primary cell and battery exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X units), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada amounted to -4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+2.9% per year) and Poland (+39.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for primary cell and battery exported from the United States were Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 46% of total exports. Poland, Belgium, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama, Hong Kong SAR and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.3%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +26.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average primary cell and battery export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+41.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries

Imports into the U.S.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of primary cells and batteries decreased by -4.6% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest primary cell and battery supplier to the United States, with a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, primary cell and battery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X units), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Indonesia (X units), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+26.5% per year) and Indonesia (+10.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of primary cells and batteries to the United States, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+22.4% per year) and Japan (+3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average primary cell and battery import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
