In 2022, overseas shipments of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -31.5% to X cubic meters, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 332%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (X cubic meters), Japan (X cubic meters) and China (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of coniferous roundwood exports from the United States, together accounting for 81% of total exports. India, Vietnam and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Japan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for roundwood (coniferous) exports from the United States, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 19% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Japan totaled +2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-9.7% per year) and Canada (+0.1% per year).

The average coniferous roundwood export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 84%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to India ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the U.S.
In 2022, purchases abroad of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -1% to X cubic meters, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 501% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 502% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Sweden (X cubic meters), Canada (X cubic meters) and New Zealand (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of coniferous roundwood imports to the United States, with a combined 98% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by New Zealand (with a CAGR of +103.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest coniferous roundwood suppliers to the United States were Sweden ($X), Canada ($X) and New Zealand ($X), with a combined 99% share of total imports.
Sweden, with a CAGR of +119.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
