The average smoked herring export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 175% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Aruba ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+12.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the U.S.
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of smoked herrings, when their volume decreased by -3.1% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 32%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, smoked herring imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 23%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of smoked herring to the United States, with a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, smoked herring imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sierra Leone (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Guinea (X tons), with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled +6.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sierra Leone (+21.4% per year) and Guinea (+0.0% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of smoked herrings to the United States, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 1.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Sierra Leone, with a 0.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada amounted to +8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (-6.2% per year) and Sierra Leone (+28.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average smoked herring import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 89% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
