Wadding Market Size in the U.S.
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the U.S. wadding market, when its value decreased by -1.4% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +23.1% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Wadding Production in the U.S.
In value terms, wadding production shrank to $X in 2021. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Wadding production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports from the U.S.
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of wadding decreased by -7.9% to X tons in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +22.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, wadding exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main destinations of wadding exports from the United States, with a combined 81% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +31.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the largest markets for wadding exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 73% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Belgium, with a CAGR of +28.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wadding export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Wadding Imports
Imports into the U.S.
For the sixth year in a row, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of wadding, which increased by 2.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, wadding imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of wadding imports to the United States, together comprising 82% of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, Turkey and Italy, which together accounted for a further 8.5%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +84.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wadding to the United States, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+15.4% per year) and Italy (+16.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wadding import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -11.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 34%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+13.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
