Wallpaper Market Size in the U.S.

In 2021, the U.S. wallpaper market increased by 7.5% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild contraction. Wallpaper consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Wallpaper Production in the U.S.

In value terms, wallpaper production rose slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Wallpaper production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Wallpaper Exports

Exports from the U.S.

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings, when their volume increased by 17% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Canada (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of wallpaper exports from the United States, with a combined 56% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wallpaper exported from the United States were Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 64% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Mexico, with a CAGR of +36.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wallpaper export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 9%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 40% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wallpaper imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +106.3% against 2012 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wallpaper to the United States, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, wallpaper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (X tons), with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +21.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+1.3% per year) and South Korea (-3.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest wallpaper suppliers to the United States were the UK ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 67% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +16.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average wallpaper import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper import price decreased by -19.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 31%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
