Asbestos Market Size in Uganda

In 2022, the Ugandan asbestos market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a perceptible slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 52% against the previous year. Asbestos production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of asbestoses increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 104%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for asbestos exports from Uganda, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, asbestos exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sudan (X kg), fivefold. Burundi (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +49.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (-27.8% per year) and Burundi (-22.6% per year).

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for asbestoses exports from Uganda, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +26.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (-19.9% per year) and Sudan (-32.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asbestos export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -20.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 108%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of asbestoses increased by 188% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 709% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 950%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of asbestos to Uganda, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, asbestos imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled -10.1%.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of asbestoses to Uganda, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled -13.9%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asbestos import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for China totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-4.2%).
