Athletic Footwear Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan athletic footwear market fell rapidly to $X in 2022, dropping by -44.4% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, posted a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of athletic footwear exported from Uganda skyrocketed to X pairs, jumping by 72% against 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 840% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X pairs in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, athletic footwear exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,204% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X pairs) and Ireland (X pairs) were the main destinations of athletic footwear exports from Uganda.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of 0.0%).

In value terms, Ireland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for athletic footwear exports from Uganda, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Ireland was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average athletic footwear export price amounted to $X per pair, with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, athletic footwear export price decreased by -10.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per pair in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per pair), while the average price for exports to Burundi totaled $X per pair.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Athletic Footwear Imports

Imports into Uganda

Athletic footwear imports into Uganda dropped dramatically to X pairs in 2022, falling by -45.7% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 417% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X pairs, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, athletic footwear imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 444% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X pairs) was the main athletic footwear supplier to Uganda, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, athletic footwear imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X pairs), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +115.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+6.0% per year) and South Africa (-57.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the largest athletic footwear suppliers to Uganda, together comprising 99% of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +99.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average athletic footwear import price amounted to $X per pair, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 99%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per pair. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per pair), while the price for India ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+17.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
