Travelling Wool Rug Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan travelling wool rug market fell modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Travelling Wool Rug Production in Uganda

In value terms, travelling wool rug production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of blankets and travelling rugs of wool, when their volume increased by 45% to X units. In general, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 953% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, travelling wool rug exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,388% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X units) was the main destination for travelling wool rug exports from Uganda, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, travelling wool rug exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Sudan (X units), fourfold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda totaled -6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (-15.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-8.8% per year).

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for blankets and travelling rugs of wool exports from Uganda, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burundi ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (-12.4% per year) and Sudan (-21.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average travelling wool rug export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+25.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Travelling Wool Rug Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, travelling wool rug imports into Uganda dropped slightly to X units, reducing by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 176%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, travelling wool rug imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 154% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X units) constituted the largest supplier of travelling wool rug to Uganda, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, travelling wool rug imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), sevenfold. China (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya totaled +4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+23.5% per year) and China (-29.8% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of blankets and travelling rugs of wool to Uganda, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Kenya totaled +15.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-7.7% per year) and Italy (+39.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average travelling wool rug import price amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 241%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+32.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
