Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 486%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 158%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X kg) was the main destination for broad bean and horse bean exports from Uganda, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, broad bean and horse bean exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Sudan (X kg), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda stood at -28.9%.

In value terms, the largest markets for broad bean and horse bean exported from Uganda were South Sudan ($X) and Rwanda ($X).

South Sudan, with a CAGR of -3.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for broad beans and horse beans (dry) amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Uganda

Broad bean and horse bean imports into Uganda contracted sharply to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -47.8% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2,197%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 3,235%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) constituted the largest broad bean and horse bean supplier to Uganda, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, broad bean and horse bean imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Egypt (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya stood at +24.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-22.6% per year) and Rwanda (-6.9% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of broad beans and horse beans (dry) to Uganda, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya amounted to +20.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (-28.3% per year) and Rwanda (-14.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for broad beans and horse beans (dry) amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 79%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
