Market Size for Brooms, Brushes, And Mops in Uganda

The Ugandan broom, brush, and mop market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -13.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption saw a abrupt contraction. Broom, brush, and mop consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 28% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 39%. The exports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) was the main destination for broom, brush, and mop exports from Uganda, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, broom, brush, and mop exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Sudan (X units), twofold. Rwanda (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at -11.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-4.3% per year) and Rwanda (-20.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for broom, brush, and mop exported from Uganda were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Sudan ($X) and Sudan ($X), together comprising 92% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, South Sudan, with a CAGR of -1.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average broom, brush, and mop export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+25.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Brooms, Brushes, And Mops

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, broom, brush, and mop imports into Uganda reduced to X units, which is down by -14.1% against the year before. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 158% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of broom, brush, and mop to Uganda, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, broom, brush, and mop imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X units), sevenfold. Tanzania (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +23.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+81.0% per year) and Tanzania (-9.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of brooms, brushes, and mops to Uganda, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +13.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.4% per year) and Kenya (+7.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average broom, brush, and mop import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 172%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the price for Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+33.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
