The Ugandan canned mushroom market surged to $X in 2022, growing by 2,643% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption showed buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Uganda
For the fourth year in a row, Uganda recorded decline in overseas shipments of canned mushrooms, which decreased by -19.6% to X kg in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 291%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, canned mushroom exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 224% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X kg) was the main destination for canned mushroom exports from Uganda, with a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, canned mushroom exports to South Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X kg), twofold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Sudan totaled -2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.5% per year) and Rwanda (-29.4% per year).
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned mushrooms exports from Uganda, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Sudan ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to +17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (-31.8% per year) and Rwanda (-27.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average canned mushroom export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 27% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, canned mushroom export price increased by +54.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 72%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Uganda
Canned mushroom imports into Uganda soared to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 2,639% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, canned mushroom imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of canned mushroom to Uganda, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, canned mushroom imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), more than tenfold. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +56.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-5.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-1.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of canned mushrooms to Uganda, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +53.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+20.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-2.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average canned mushroom import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+22.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
