Cassava Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan cassava market shrank to $X in 2022, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -20.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Cassava Production in Uganda
In value terms, cassava production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 101%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average yield of cassava in Uganda fell to X tons per ha, waning by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the yield saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 63% against the previous year. The cassava yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of cassava were harvested in Uganda; increasing by 11% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cassava harvested area increased by +11.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 22% against the previous year. The cassava harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda
In 2022, overseas shipments of cassava were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 2,428% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cassava exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 1,190% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from Uganda, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, cassava exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Sudan (X tons), with a 19% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +74.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+15.9% per year) and South Sudan (+59.2% per year).
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) remains the key foreign market for cassava exports from Uganda, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Sudan ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 23% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +105.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Sudan (+55.4% per year) and Kenya (+19.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cassava export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Sudan ($X per ton) and Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) and Kenya ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+19.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cassava Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of cassava, when their volume increased by 86% to X tons. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 3,081% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cassava imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 2,079% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) was the main supplier of cassava to Uganda, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Tanzania stood at +1.2%.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Uganda.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Tanzania stood at +2.3%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cassava import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cassava import price decreased by -9.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Tanzania.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Tanzania amounted to +1.1% per year.
