Cement Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan cement market amounted to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.0% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cement Production in Uganda

In value terms, cement production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 8.5% against the previous year. Cement production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Cement Exports

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, the amount of cement exported from Uganda dropped slightly to X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cement exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Sudan (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) were the main destinations of cement exports from Uganda, together accounting for 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Sudan (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Sudan ($X) and Burundi ($X) were the largest markets for cement exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

South Sudan, with a CAGR of +10.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Export Prices by Country

The average cement export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+25.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cement Imports

Imports into Uganda

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of cement decreased by -13.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cement imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a sharp setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) were the main suppliers of cement imports to Uganda, with a combined 96% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +72.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the largest cement suppliers to Uganda, together comprising 96% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Egypt, with a CAGR of +70.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average cement import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 44%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
