Chocolate Market Size in Uganda
The Ugandan chocolate market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Chocolate consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Chocolate Production in Uganda
In value terms, chocolate production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +7.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Chocolate Exports
Exports from Uganda
In 2022, overseas shipments of chocolate and cocoa products were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 141%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chocolate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Sudan (X tons), Burundi (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of chocolate exports from Uganda, together accounting for 97% of total exports. These countries were followed by Kenya, which accounted for a further 3.3%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +117.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for chocolate exported from Uganda were Germany ($X), South Sudan ($X) and Burundi ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Kenya, which accounted for a further 4.7%.
Kenya, with a CAGR of +77.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average chocolate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 118%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+48.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chocolate Imports
Imports into Uganda
In 2022, supplies from abroad of chocolate and cocoa products decreased by -1.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chocolate imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 41%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of chocolate imports to Uganda, together comprising 64% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Brazil and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +38.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chocolate suppliers to Uganda were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together comprising 56% of total imports. Turkey, Kenya, Brazil and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +59.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average chocolate import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 37%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
