Cow Peas Market Size in Uganda

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ugandan cow peas market, when its value decreased by -19.8% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +50.5% against 2016 indices. Cow peas consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Cow Peas Production in Uganda

In value terms, cow peas production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of cow peas (dry) in Uganda surged to X kg per ha in 2022, growing by 35% against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average cow peas yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of cow peas (dry) production in Uganda fell modestly to X ha, waning by -1.5% compared with 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 15% against the previous year. The cow peas harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, the amount of cow peas (dry) exported from Uganda soared to X tons, growing by 236% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for cow peas exports from Uganda, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a 2.6% share of total exports. Sudan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kenya totaled -1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-23.2% per year) and Sudan (-20.5% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the key foreign market for cow peas (dry) exports from Uganda, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kenya totaled +2.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (-9.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-17.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cow peas export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 30% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cow peas export price decreased by -3.9% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sudan (+13.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda

Cow peas imports into Uganda soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 926% against the previous year. In general, imports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 19,236% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cow peas imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21,809% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Rwanda (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main suppliers of cow peas imports to Uganda, together comprising 100% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +68.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cow peas suppliers to Uganda were Rwanda ($X), Kenya ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together accounting for 99% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Kenya, with a CAGR of +55.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cow peas import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.3% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cow peas import price increased by +93.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
