Market Size for Crispbread, Rusks and Toasted Bread in Uganda

The Ugandan market for crispbread, rusks and toasted bread contracted to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Crispbread, rusk and toasted bread consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 162%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 119%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Sudan (X kg) were the main destinations of crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exports from Uganda, together accounting for 98% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, which accounted for a further 1.9%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exported from Uganda were Rwanda ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Sudan ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for crispbread, rusks and toasted bread amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -20.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 27%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Crispbread, Rusks and Toasted Bread

Imports into Uganda

Crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports into Uganda contracted sharply to X tons in 2022, waning by -22.3% against the previous year. In general, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of crispbread, rusk and toasted bread to Uganda, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Denmark (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (X tons), with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +37.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+48.6% per year) and India (+3.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest crispbread, rusk and toasted bread suppliers to Uganda were China ($X), Denmark ($X) and India ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +55.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for crispbread, rusks and toasted bread amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread import price increased by +19.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
