In value terms, modified starches exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,929% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for modified starches exports from Uganda, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, modified starches exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Burundi stood at +58.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+61.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.6% per year).

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for dextrins and other modified starches exports from Uganda, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda stood at +102.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+44.3% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-1.2% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 331% against the previous year. In 2022, imports of dextrins and other modified starches into Uganda surged to X tons, increasing by 15% compared with the year before. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 168%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, modified starches imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of modified starches imports to Uganda, together comprising 76% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +50.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), the United States ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the largest modified starches suppliers to Uganda, together accounting for 73% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +47.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average modified starches import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 26%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
