Dry Vegetable Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan dry vegetable market fell significantly to $X in 2022, dropping by -26.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced descent. Dry vegetable consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Dry Vegetable Production in Uganda

In value terms, dry vegetable production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 20%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, overseas shipments of dry vegetables were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 947%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry vegetable exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,409% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) was the main destination for dry vegetable exports from Uganda, accounting for a 65% share of total exports. Moreover, dry vegetable exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kenya (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Democratic Republic of the Congo totaled +68.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+122.7% per year) and Kenya (+8.0% per year).

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Turkey ($X) and Kenya ($X) were the largest markets for dry vegetable exported from Uganda worldwide, together comprising 96% of total exports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +115.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average dry vegetable export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a resilient increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Dry Vegetable Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X tons of dry vegetables were imported into Uganda; picking up by 185% against the year before. In general, imports recorded a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 1,114%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry vegetable imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 912% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X tons) constituted the largest dry vegetable supplier to Uganda, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, dry vegetable imports from Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Tanzania stood at +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+29.0% per year) and China (+28.9% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Italy ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest dry vegetable suppliers to Uganda, with a combined 72% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +36.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average dry vegetable import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -18.4% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dry vegetable import price decreased by -26.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
