Durum Wheat Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan durum wheat market stood at $X in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, consumption posted strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Durum Wheat Production in Uganda

In value terms, durum wheat production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 189%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of durum wheat in Uganda amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The durum wheat yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the durum wheat harvested area in Uganda declined slightly to X ha, leveling off at 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to durum wheat production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Durum Wheat Exports

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of durum wheat, when their volume increased by 45% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 1,036%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 1,177%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Burundi (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Uganda, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, durum wheat exports to Burundi exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Burundi totaled +71.7%.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) and Burundi ($X) were the largest markets for durum wheat exported from Uganda worldwide.

Burundi, with a CAGR of +61.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The average durum wheat export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -35.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+100.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Durum Wheat Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X tons of durum wheat were imported into Uganda; flattening at the previous year. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 414%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 485%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kenya (X tons) was the main supplier of durum wheat to Uganda, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by India (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kenya stood at +89.3%.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) constituted the largest supplier of durum wheat to Uganda, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 2.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kenya stood at +77.8%.

Import Prices by Country

The average durum wheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for India totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
