Festive Articles Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan festive articles market contracted rapidly to $X in 2022, dropping by -32.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Festive Articles Exports

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, shipments abroad of festive or carnival articles increased by 29% to X kg for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 556% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, festive articles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 357%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sudan (X kg) was the main destination for festive articles exports from Uganda, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, festive articles exports to Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X kg), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X kg), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sudan amounted to +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (+36.4% per year) and Belgium (-1.6% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the key foreign market for festive or carnival articles exports from Uganda, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Belgium totaled +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+3.4% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average festive articles export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Festive Articles Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, approx. X tons of festive or carnival articles were imported into Uganda; which is down by -25.6% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 425% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, festive articles imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and China (X kg) were the main suppliers of festive articles imports to Uganda, with a combined 78% share of total imports. The UK, the Philippines and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +55.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of festive or carnival articles to Uganda, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +9.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+25.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+14.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average festive articles import price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, festive articles import price increased by +105.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 53% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
